Soy Latte Please

There had been a dramatic surge in demand for customers in cafes ordering soy or dairy alternatives with their coffee. At Black Market Roasters we share our experience and a few facts about the history of Soy.

Our customers and what they drink:

48% Full Cream Milk
18% Lite Milk
2% Almond Milk
20% Soy Milk
12% Black

We have seen a large reduction in the demand for Lite milk as consumers opt for either black coffee, soy or almond milk.

The process of making Soy milk is relatively simple in that you create a watery liquid with soaked and strained soy beans, then adding some flavouring like sugar and salt.

Many of you would of heard about the Bonsoy product scare and an accusation of dangerous levels of iodine in the product. This supposedly came about due to pure kombu (seaweed) replacing kombu powder in the recipe.

Whilst there are other soy milk alternatives, from a barista point of view and we are told now a health point of view, it tends to be the soy milk of choice for many.

Soy based products are a great source of iron, fibre, isoflavones and other vitamins. Often lower in saturated fat than dairy as well as the carbon, water and phosphate footprint is much less than that of its dairy counterpart.

For most though, dairy is considered a complete food with complex fats and amino acids used to support the young calf and provides a great addition to the diets of consumers.

At Black Market Roasters, we offer both products and ensure that they both taste amazing with our coffee.
